Forays into creepy castles, dinner in Dracula’s old haunts and supernatural frights are just a sampling of the Halloween horrors and happenings for people to partake in this week.

Travel agencies, units and organizations on bases have plenty to get Halloween revelers into the spirit. Many of the trips for this Halloween weekend are booked, but those same tours are slated to be offered next year. And there is also plenty to do for children and families.

Volunteers dressed as demons, ghouls and other creatures of the night started scaring the bejesus out of people Tuesday at the haunted tent city a few miles outside of Ramstein Air Base’s west gate. Organizers said there will be plenty of signs to point people in the right direction.

"It is basically haunted tents with different things and attractions," said Air Force Staff Sgt. Adam Brady. "It’s definitely scary. If you are claustrophobic, we got that type of room … if you are afraid of chopped up body parts, we got that."

The haunted tent city is in its 13th year and it is not recommended for children under 12, Brady said. Money generated by the $5 admission fee will be donated to various organizations and causes throughout the community.

The haunted tent city is open from 6 p.m. to midnight through Friday.

Officials with the Schinnen, Netherlands, Army community have a tamer, more-child-oriented Halloween event, "Trunk or Treat."

The Trunk or Treat tradition started as a way to let the kids go trick-or-treating in a community that does not have on-base housing, said Joanne Hernandez, director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation for the U.S. Army Garrison in Schinnen.

Trunk or Treat entails people lining up their cars and handing out goodies to children from their car trunks or tables. The event is from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

"Last year we had at least 400 kids trick-or-treating and they bring their friends, so I would say there is a total of 800 to 1,000 people on base that night," Hernandez said. "We have a lot of Dutch employees who come and bring their family. It is a good local community event."

Travel agencies around bases this Halloween are offering tours of Transylvania, Frakenstein’s Castle and other supposedly haunted places.

This year Army Morale, Recreation and Welfare is taking off for Frankenstein’s Castle on All Hallow’s Eve near Darmstadt, rather than waiting for Saturday. The $69 trip is sold out, but it is scheduled for next year.

The castle’s Web site claims that it is haunted.

"Most people that go there are dressed in costumes. They got it set up so it has its frights," said Chris Harpermann, acting director of MWR Outdoor Recreation. "It’s like a haunted house in a castle setting."

For people who prefer to go all out when it comes to Halloween, 45 people who booked a trip with RTT Travel at Ramstein are taking off for Transylvania for a three-day tour of the countryside, Bucharest, Romania, and to dine on Halloween evening in Dracula’s Castle.

"So far on that tour, people really like it," RTT Transportation Clerk Andrea Ulrich said.
