Carlos Simpson has been creating haunted houses for five years. This year, he and his team have taken over an abandoned building and filled it with all types of scary stuff.
While there’s a kid-friendly few hours from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 31, Simpson dares any grown-up to come check out the joint from 6 to 11:30 p.m. on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31.
How did you come up with the idea?
Basically I did haunted houses before coming into the Air Force. Our booster club was looking for ways to raise money; I approached them about doing a haunted house, we tried it and it was a pretty big hit.
So what’s your motivation to do this? Do you have a special affection for Halloween?
No, I just like scaring people! [laughing]
What does it take to erect Haunt World?
It all starts out with just planning, coming up with ideas. We get a couple creative people and just bounce ideas off of each other. Then we have our building crew; they’ve done a great job. I give them ideas, and they build them. Then I lay out the soundtracks for the rooms. Then we have people come in and decorate.
How many people are involved?
Just right now for the main actors in the building, there’s about 50. It’s pretty popular now, and everybody wants to get in on it. I’d say at least 100 people involved overall.
So this is a pretty winding haunted experience, not just some broken hallway?
We have 13 rooms. It’s a pretty big building.
When I was 6, a guy in a south Minneapolis haunted house told me he was going to chop off my head. I took his threat seriously and have been damaged ever since. Can patrons expect that level of abject horror, or is that something that someone could onlyget away with in the less-regulated 1980s?
Yeah, we tend not to make personal threats. We try not to go after the little kids too much. To me personally, it’s more fun to scare the adults than the kids. It doesn’t take much to scare the kids.
So you think you’ll scare the adults?
Oh yeah. I can guarantee you.
