Twelve militants were killed in fighting after a Black Hawk helicopter was brought down by enemy fire in Afghanistan on Monday, military officials say.
The helicopter was on a mission in Wardak province west of Kabul.
The UH-60 helicopter "came under small-arms fire from a number of militants," said a press release issued Tuesday by U.S. Forces Afghanistan. "The helicopter crew returned fire, but had to land when the tail was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade."
According to the release, five militants were killed during the first response to the crash, and as a search of the area continued, the militants attacked again. Seven more enemy fighters were killed in that engagement, and one was captured, officials said.
No coalition casualties were reported in the helicopter crash or fighting. The helicopter has since been recovered and taken to a coalition base.
