Dressed in a Batman, Superman or other superhero costume this Halloween, young trick-or-treaters might feel as if they are more powerful than a locomotive.

However, remembering to use common sense and maybe carrying a flashlight on their utility belts are the best ways to stay safe, base officials say.

Because trick-or-treating takes place after dark, it is a good idea to make sure costumes are made of a reflective material or have some other reflective item on them, such as a sticker or belt, said Satoshi Usher, the police liaison and chief of vehicle registration, pass and identification and base access for Camp Zama.

"It’s also a good idea to carry a flashlight and to always walk with an adult," said Usher, explaining that even though it’s Halloween and lots of people will be out walking around, trick-or-treaters should still stay on the sidewalks and look both ways when crossing the street.

Drivers also should be careful and drive slowly, paying attention for excited ghosts and goblins who might dart out into the street, he said.

"Overall, the biggest key is to use common sense," Usher said.
