A USS Peleliu sailor was charged with aggravated sexual assault in an incident Saturday at a brothel in Sydney, Australia, the U.S. 7th Fleet and the U.S. Embassy said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a U.S. Marine, also from the Peleliu, suffered a fractured skull after a seemingly unprovoked attack while on shore leave in the city’s red-light district, according to Australian police.

The Peleliu and the destroyer USS Halsey arrived Friday in Sydney for a port call while returning from the Persian Gulf and about 3,000 Marines and sailors disembarked, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The sailor, a petty officer third class, was arrested after allegedly assaulting a "local female" at about 9 p.m. Saturday, an embassy spokesperson said.

The incident happened at the Golden Apple Brothel and both the New South Wales police and the U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service are investigating, 7th Fleet spokesman Lt. Cate Wallace said in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes on Tuesday.

The sailor was charged by Australian authorities after voluntary questioning with U.S. officials present. The servicemember was released to the Peleliu and must return to Australia on Nov. 10 to face the charge, the embassy said.

In the other incident, a Marine walked out onto a roadway in Kings Cross early Saturday where he was punched in the face, Kings Cross police said in a release Sunday.

The 23-year-old corporal had blocked the path of a sedan and was ushered off the street by another pedestrian, the release said.

A passenger in the vehicle then got out and punched the Marine "without provocation," causing him to fall to the ground and fracture his skull, according to the release.

On Sunday, the Marine was in serious but stable condition at an area hospital and police were searching for witnesses in the incident.
