Seoul city has joined the fight against motorists making illegal left turns into two U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan gates, according to a military news release.
South Korean work crews installed orange traffic pylons Thursday on the city street separating the Camp Kim gate and Yongsan’s Military Police Station gate.
The area has been the site of five accidents since July involving base personnel making illegal left turns across two city bus lanes and three lanes of normal traffic, garrison officials said.
"The trend indicated that if we were to have a serious traffic accident, this is the location where it would have occurred," garrison safety manager Russell Obey said in the release. "This is a proactive safety measure."
Ricky Oxendine, garrison emergency services director, said in the release that the work showcases the good relationship between the city and the Korean National Police.
New traffic signs also will be installed next week, he said.
Song Young-ki, a spokesman for the Yongsan District traffic administration division, said the effort will help protect both South Korean and U.S. military community drivers.
The district authorized the work after approval from the Korean National Police, Song said.
Song predicts the pylons will prevent future accidents.
Yongsan Garrison officials gave the following directions for driving between Yongsan and Camp Kim.
Driving from Camp Kim to Yongsan Garrison: Turn right out of the Camp Kim gate. At the Samgakji intersection, turn left toward Itaewon. Make a legal U-turn at the next intersection. Turn right at the Samgakji intersection and turn right into the Military Police Station gate.
Driving from Yongsan Garrison to Camp Kim: Exit the Military Police Station gate and turn left toward the Samgakji intersection. At the Samgakji intersection, turn right and cross the train tracks.
Turn right at the next intersection and head toward the rail bridge. Turn right at the main intersection; turn right into the Camp Kim gate.
