The 48th Fighter Wing airman who died Tuesday in a car accident in England has been identified as Senior Airman Jacob Butler, RAF Lakenheath officials said in a news release issued Thursday.

Butler sustained head and chest injuries when his purple Volvo veered off the road and hit a tree on the A1095 near Reydon, about 70 miles from the base. He was taken to a nearby hospital but died shortly after arriving, according to the Suffolk police report.

Butler, 23, was an aircraft sensor team member with the 48th Component Maintenance Squadron at Lakenheath, where he had been stationed since April 2007.

Suffolk police responded to the accident, which occurred about 10 p.m., after witnesses reported seeing Butler’s car drive off the road, according to the Suffolk police report.

British authorities are still investigating the accident and ask anyone with information to call 01473 613500.

A memorial service is scheduled for Oct. 17 at the RAF Lakenheath chapel.

Capt. Joyal is named Service Woman of Year

The American Legion Auxiliary selected Capt. Donna Joyal, stationed in Naples, Italy, as the active-duty Service Woman of the Year representing the U.S. Navy, according to a Navy news release.

Joyal, the Naval Forces Europe/6th Fleet deputy director of Manpower and Personnel, is one of five women selected for the award, each representing a branch of the military service. She has been a member of the ALA for three years and represented the Navy at the organization’s 88th annual national convention in Phoenix in August.

Following her nomination, she wrote an essay on the importance of serving in the U.S. military.

The ALA is a veterans’ support organization honoring servicewomen.
