An RAF Lakenheath-based airman died Tuesday night after his vehicle struck a tree, according to local police and base officials.

The base is withholding the identity of the 23-year-old airman pending notification of his next of kin. He was a member of the 48th Component Maintenance Squadron, according to a base press release.

The man sustained head and chest injuries and was rushed to James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth where he died shortly after arriving, officials said. No one else was reported injured in the crash.

Suffolk police were called about 10:15 p.m. after witnesses reported that a purple Volvo S40 veered off the road and hit a tree on the A1095, according to the constabulary. The accident occurred about a quarter-mile east of the A12 junction between Blythburgh and Reydon, about 50 miles from Lakenheath.

Suffolk police were still investigating the accident Wednesday and asked any witnesses to contact +01473 613500.

Another Lakenheath-based airman was killed last summer when his motorcycle collided with a car in the nearby town of Newmarket in July.
