PYEONGTAEK, South Korea — A Camp Humphreys soldier convicted in an ATM fraud case was sentenced Tuesday to jail and a discharge, officials said.

Spc. Lance E. Lesueur of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment received three months in jail, a reduction to the military’s lowest pay grade, forfeiture of $898 a month for three months, and a bad-conduct discharge.

Military judge Lt. Col. Thomas M. Kulish sentenced Lesueur after a jury found him guilty of conspiracy to commit larceny and making a false official statement. But jurors acquitted Lesueur of attempted larceny and solicitation.

Tuesday’s court-martial was an outgrowth of an ATM fraud case that saw the Sept. 17 conviction of Pvt. James L. Bolton, also of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, after he pleaded guilty to larceny, attempting to use false information, conspiracy to use false information and solicitation.

Bolton cheated an on-post bank of about $3,000 through a series of bogus ATM transactions in which he would indicate on the ATM keypad that he was depositing cash, when in fact he was depositing empty envelopes.

The ATM would credit his account in the amount of the fake deposits. He’d then make immediate cash withdrawals.

Bolton later tried the same deception, but used another soldier’s PIN. The attempt failed, and bank officials alerted Army authorities.

It could not be immediately learned Tuesday whether it was Lesueur’s PIN used in that final transaction, or what other, specific connections he might have had to the scam.

Kulish sentenced Bolton to reduction to the military’s lowest pay grade, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, a bad-conduct discharge, and 180 days in jail. He was credited for the 121 days he spent in pretrial confinement.
