Cheryl Cole is the ultimate wag. She doesn’t have the trans-Atlantic appeal of Victoria Beckham, but she seems to have the potential.
Thus, she’s referred to as a WAG in the British tabloid press, an acronym that’s come to mean the wives and girlfriends of famous English football players.
Like Posh, the 25-year-old Newcastle native doesn’t solely ride the pop culture train on the coattails of her famous footballer husband, Ashley Cole.
Oh no, she’s firmly staked her claim in her own territory of the British celebrity scene as part of the group Girls Aloud, a Spice Girls-like troupe of young, attractive singers. However, Cole’s recent claim to fame has been as a judge on the British TV show "The X Factor," a talent contest akin to "American Idol," complete with Simon Cowell.
Cole plays the equivalent of Paula Abdul on the popular reality entertainment show, giving the thumbs up to pathetic hopefuls with no talent and puppy-dog eyes. The ying to Cowell’s blunt yang on the judge’s panel.
Even before "The X Factor," Cole broke out of Girls Aloud by collaborating with Will.I.Am on the hit song "Heartbreaker," which rocketed to the top of the British and American radio pop charts earlier this year. Media reports say that Cole was asked to sing on the track after auditioning as a dancer for the video.
Her girl-next-door songbird persona has made Cole a media darling, although her marital troubles have put her and her hubby in the gossip pages of late. But the latest celebrity news has the couple on the road to happily ever after.
If Cole can learn to charm the media in the States the way she has in Britain, watch out Posh.
