Two U.S. sailors and a dependent wife were involved in — but not the cause of — a traffic accident in Italy this weekend in which a motorist ran over and killed an Italian man directing traffic, a Navy official said.
The three Americans, driving on the SS 162 headed toward Lago Patria, came upon an accident site and slowed.
Another driver attempted to pass them, and clipped the sailors’ vehicle, said Lt. Paul Macapagal, a spokesman for the Navy base in Naples.
The driver who was trying to pass lost control of his car and ran over a man who apparently was trying to direct traffic around the original accident, Macapagal said.
None of the Americans were injured in the incident, which happened late Saturday night or Sunday morning, he said.
However, Italian authorities impounded their vehicle as part of the investigation.
The driver who passed them was arrested at the scene, Macapagal said.
The man who was killed was a member of the Italian military.
