Pfc. Christopher A. Bartkiewicz, a 25-year-old soldier with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment who was killed in Iraq, will be remembered Wednesday at Baumholder’s Chapel One.

Bartkiewicz, of Dumerferline, Ill., will be eulogized at 10 a.m along with fellow Iron Brigade soldier Pfc. Jamel A. Bryant, who died in a separate incident on Sept. 27.

Bartkiewicz died Sept. 30 from small-arms fire while on foot patrol in Baghdad, according to the Defense Department.

His mother-in-law, Carol Hubbard, said Bartkiewicz joined the Army nearly two years ago because he thought it would be a good way to support his family.

"Being a part of the Army was something he’d always wanted to do," Hubbard told the Journal Star of Peoria, Ill. "He was just a hard-working kid who wanted the best for his family. He knew when he went in that chances were great he’d go to Iraq."

Bartkiewicz and his wife, Emily, were to celebrate their seventh wedding anniversary later this month. The couple has two daughters — McKayla, 6, and Morgan, 2.

Pfc. Eric Williams, a medic who treated Bartkiewicz’s injuries, wrote on his blog about his friend.

"Bart was a great man and a loving father and husband. He was one of our brothers and will be missed," Williams wrote.

Family members also blogged memories of the soldier.

"Chris was a wonderful son I was blessed to have him in my life," wrote his mother, Darlene Smith, of North Carolina. "Chris was also a terrific brother to his three sisters who loved him without measure."

Bartkiewicz is the eighth 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division soldier who has died since the unit deployed in April.
