Japanese police are looking for the driver of a car that hit and injured a Japanese man in Yokohama Friday night, and they think it could be an American servicemember or civilian employee.

A 32-year-old Yokosuka city resident, Kenta Kawazoe, was struck about 10:55 p.m. by a purple, Y-plate car in a parking area along the Bay Shore route of Shuto Highway, according to a Tsurumi Police Station spokesman in Yokohama. Y-plates are issued to SOFA-status car owners.

Kawazoe told police he was run over when he stood in front of the car after an argument with the driver.

Kawazoe suffered a cervical spine injury and was hospitalized, the police spokesman said, adding that the police are investigating the incident as a possible attempted murder.

The spokesman said the name or base of the suspect is unknown, but that officers will request the U.S. military’s cooperation in their investigation.

U.S. Forces Japan officials could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
