U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan officials are prepping for Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-12.
The national theme is "Prevent Home Fires," and Yongsan firefighters want to teach the community to help prevent cooking, smoking and heating fires, according to a Yongsan news release on Wednesday.
"Fire prevention starts at home, so we want to reinforce that message," Yongsan fire chief Alex Temporado said in the release. "Fortunately at Yongsan, we have had few home fires, but the ones we have had were mainly from cooking."
Events include:
Monday — Deadline for the elementary and middle school fire prevention poster contest. Winners will receive Army and Air Force Exchange Service gift cards.
Monday-Thursday — Main fire station tours, briefings and artificial smoke evacuation training; school assemblies and Child and Youth Service fire evacuation drills.
Wednesday — Community event in the parking lot next to the fire department from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Garrison and local South Korean firefighters offer displays and hands-on events, including fire extinguisher and CPR training. Free burgers and hot dogs are available courtesy of the United Service Organizations. A kitchen fire safety demonstration will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Hannam Village.
