A bit off base, in Beck Row village, is a pub and restaurant that offers a touch of Americana with a British flavor.
The Kings Head at 40 The Street Beck Row has been around for at least 100 years, said owners Mal and Marcia Bucknell. But the Bucknells just bought the place about a year ago and spruced it up a tad.
They also are serving up more than just frosty brewskies and other spirits with a variety of dishes. The food selection includes plenty to whet one’s appetite with its scampi, chili, fish and chips, vegetarian dishes and a traditional British roast on Sundays, during the day.
The fish and chips is a hot seller, of course, Mal Bucknell said.
Daily specials are always changing, and sometimes a smattering of American dishes, notably Cajun cuisine, is tossed in the mix to spice things up, Marcia Bucknell said.
Although the Bucknells have only owned The Kings Head briefly, the restaurant business is nothing new to them. The couple owned the Bull, a restaurant that no longer exists, in Lakenheath. Mal is also a former chef at the Bird In Hand, just outside of RAF Mildenhall.
The Bucknells describe their clientele as a mix of Americans with regulars that tend to come in on the same night.
"We get a lot of guys on TDY (temporary duty)," Mal Bucknell said. "A lot of Americans come in here, because it’s recommended."
One patron heard about the place while he was in Portugal, he said.
"We have a few Americans who are regulars," Marcia Bucknell added.
The Kings Head’s interior is like taking a stroll through Hollywood history with its photos of legends, such as Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne and Steve McQueen. And Mal Bucknell is constantly adding to what he calls a "theme." Not having a theme to give people something to talk about when they enjoy a meal would be pretty blah, he said.
His recent additions include pictures of John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction" and of more recent flicks.
The interior is a contrast to the building’s stone façade. But underneath all the American movie star photos is a decor that is definitely British, with its lamp-lit bar and red walls.
The eatery also has a pool table and outside dining when the weather isn’t dreary.
And it is also a place for anyone who fancies darts. Men’s and women’s leagues can be seen shooting it out on weeknights.
The Kings Head is open from 5-11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 4-11 p.m. Fridays; noon to 11 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 10:30 p.m. Sundays.
