The Korea-U.S. Alliance Friendship Society presented the 7th Air Force commander with an honorary Korean name during a Monday night ceremony, according to an Air Force news release.
Lt. Gen. Stephen G. Wood was given the name Woo Chang-hui during the ceremony, according to the release.
Friendship Society chairman Suh Jin-sup explained that Woo sounds like Wood’s name, Chang means blue and “hui” means bright or sparkling, according to the release.
Suh explained that as the 7th Air Force Commander, Wood was given a name that “contains a hero of the Air Force that makes the clear and blue sky bright.”
The society also presented certificates to 50 airmen.
About 200 South Korean civic leaders, Marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen — including Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Rodney J. McKinley — attended the ceremony.
“It is not by my actions alone that I accept this incredible honor,” Wood said in the release. “It is because of these amazing wingmen whom I have the pleasure of serving with that I gladly accept this token of our friendship and our continued dedication to the ROK-US Alliance.”
Wood leads about 7,800 Air Force troops in South Korea, according to the release.
