YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — The death of a former captain was observed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk this week.

Rear Adm. Martin Carmody passed away March 7 in Virginia Beach, Va., according to a Kitty Hawk news release.

Carmody’s passing was commemorated in the ship’s newspaper “as a way to keep our sailors in touch with the past and history of the ship and shipmates,” said Kitty Hawk spokesman Lt. Bill Clinton. “We sent flowers and a small photo book to the family out of respect for a former shipmate.”

Carmody, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, commanded Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam conflict, from 1965 to 1966.

Under Carmody, Kitty Hawk set a Pacific fleet under way replenishment record by transferring 315 tons of ordnance with USS Pyro, the release said.

Carmody earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Legions of Merit, two Distinguished Service Medals, nine Air Medals and a Bronze Star with a “V” device for combat action. He also received the “Grey Eagle Award” in 1976 and 1977 for being the longest-serving active-duty naval aviator, the release said.
