A main road on U.S. Naval Base Guam was to be renamed Friday in honor of a Guam woman who had befriended thousands of sailors since World War II.
Seabee Drive on Camp Covington will now be called Seabee Betty Drive, according to a Navy release.
Known as “Seabee Betty,” Vincenta Chargualaf Peredo was like a second mother and friend to Seabees from the war until her death in 2003, the release said.
She hosted fiestas for the sailors and helped bridge friendships between the military and the island’s residents, according to the release.
The tradition of naming roads for people is reserved for heroes of combat, national statesmen and citizens who benefit the quality of life for servicemembers.
