NAPLES, Italy — The United Service Organizations office has closed at the Navy Support Site in Gricignano for the time being.
The closure is part of a reorganization effort that officials say will result in fewer people on the payroll. The paid staff was cut from nine to three, but it will not affect operations, according to the local director.
“Here in Naples, the volunteer force is growing, so we were able to downsize the payroll staff. That means the services won’t diminish, but we can provide the services at less cost,” said Sabrina Pullido, the manager for the USO in Naples.
Over the past year, the volunteer staff in Naples has grown from about 10 to 35, transfers and temporary-duty assignments notwithstanding, Pullido said. In a statement released last week, the USO said the reorganization was due to a detailed review of operational and financial effectiveness.
Additionally, the organization is looking to put more money into combat zone locations.
“USO reviewed its overall operations to ensure that adequate funding was available for troops downrange,” Pullido said. “We’re looking at more cost-effective measures to put funding where it’s needed.”
The USO office at the air terminal on Capodichino remains open, with a planned ribbon-cutting in April on a cyber cafe and lounge. Future USO events planned for the Naples area include a USO Amazing Race and a USO Naples American Idol competition.
During the closure, the Support Site office is being used by USO volunteers for fleet assistance programs and planning community events. There is no date yet on the reopening of the office at Gricignano.
