Marine, 19, indicted in alleged robberyNAHA, Okinawa — A 19-year-old Marine was indicted in a Japanese court Friday on charges of beating and robbing an Okinawa City cab driver in January.
The Marine, assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, has not been named because he is considered a juvenile under Japanese law.
His case was forwarded to the Naha District 6 Prosecutors Office by a juvenile court judge last week.
A trial date hasn’t been set.
He and a co-defendant, Cpl. Joseph Wayne Riddle, 20, were arrested by Japanese police Jan. 7 a short while after they allegedly hit the cabbie with a whiskey bottle and a wooden plank after refusing to pay a 2,780 yen fare (about $25).
Riddle was indicted Jan. 28. His court date hasn’t been set.
Both Marines are being held in the Naha Detention Center.
