YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — U.S. Navy pilots will conduct field carrier landing practice March 7-16 on Iwo Jima, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Japan announced last week.

The day and night training by the Atsugi-based Carrier Air Wing 5 is required for carrier pilots before they conduct similar flights from the USS Kitty Hawk, the aircraft carrier at Yokosuka.

In the event of bad weather, the air wing will conduct the training from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. March 13-15 at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Misawa Air Base, Yokota Air Base and Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni.

Iwo Jima, also called Iwo To, is an island about 720 miles south of Tokyo. It has no permanent civilian population.
