ARLINGTON, Va. — A Korea-based airman is in jail after allegedly killing another airman in New Mexico, police said.
Tech Sgt. Gerard Parvilus, 33, faces charges of murder, kidnapping, aggravated battery and aggravated assault in connection with the incident, a police said.
Parvilus, assigned to the 8th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Kunsan Air Base and allegedly absent without leave, is being held in lieu of $2 million bail, police said.
He stands accused of killing Airman 1st Class Pierre “Tony” Smith, stationed at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., and abducting his wife, Jahaira Parvilus, who is also in the Air Force, police said. Holloman officials would not provide her rank.
Parvilus reportedly told police Smith was having an affair with his wife, but local District Attorney Scot D. Key would not speculate about Parvilus’ possible motive.
As for the alleged affair, “Its relevance is obviously to be explored later by a judge and jury,” Key said.
Parvilus is represented by the New Mexico Public Defender Department, said Jim Walker, district defender for the Twelfth Judicial District.
Walker had no comment on the case Thursday.
Parvilus was arrested Feb. 22 after turning himself in at the state police office in Alamogordo, N.M., where he reportedly told an arresting officer he had killed a man, court records said.
“He said he had killed a man that was sleeping with his wife (Jahaira),” according to the report. “He told me he killed the man with a knife.”
Police said Parvilus told the officer the body was at a local Hampton Inn, where police found Smith, who had died of either a knife or gunshot wound to the chest, records said.
His wife reportedly told police Parvilus had taken her to the Hampton Inn after assaulting her in her home by hitting her in the forehead with a revolver and threatening to kill them both, records said.
She also reportedly told police her husband said several times that he had killed Smith and showed her shredded underwear and a T-shirt belonging to Smith, records said.
Also that day, Parvilus’ sister, Geralde, reportedly told police her brother had called her to say he had killed his wife’s alleged lover, records said.
“Ms. Parvilus indicated the reason for Gerard’s call was to inform her of what he had done and to ask Geralde to take care of his children for him,” records said.
Geralde Parvilus reportedly told police she spoke with Jahaira Parvilus in a subsequent phone call, records said.
“Jahaira stated she was afraid for her life and did not want Gerard to kill himself as well … Gerard then grabbed the telephone away from Jahaira and told her that he was on his way downtown to turn himself in,” records said.
After Parvilus arrived at the state police office, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations told police Parvilus was stationed in South Korea and scheduled to return to the United States on Feb. 29, records said.
OSI spokeswoman Linda Card said she could not comment on the matter Thursday because it is an ongoing investigation.
