The 19-year-old USS Gary sailor accused of stabbing a Japanese woman and a teenager last month remains in Japanese custody, according to a Yokohama family court spokesman.
The seaman recruit has been in the court’s custody since his case was sent to the court July 25. The court decided Tuesday to hold him for another two weeks, the spokesman said.
The sailor was accused of stabbing a 16-year-old girl in the stomach and a 26-year-old woman in the back after an argument at an apartment near Mabori Kaigan train station in Yokosuka the morning of July 5. The sailor, whose age makes him a minor under Japanese law, fled but was arrested later that day after admitting to the stabbings, police said.
An Uraga police official said Wednesday that both the teenager and the woman have been released from the hospital.
The family court will decide whether to send the case back to the prosecutor’s office, dismiss the case or send the sailor to juvenile training school.
