An official at the U.S. Consulate in Naha confirmed Tuesday that 14 Americans were aboard a passenger plane on Okinawa that burst into flames shortly after landing.
All 163 passengers and crew members aboard China Airlines Flight CI120 escaped without serious injury. Citing privacy issues, the consulate declined to release the names of the passengers. It did, however, confirm that all 14 Americans were connected with the military, including active- duty personnel, their dependents and at least one defense contractor.
According to Kyodo News, Japanese investigators suspect a fuel line in the Boeing 737-800 broke down shortly after the plane landed Monday, starting a fire next to the left engine.
