The 19-year-old USS Gary sailor accused of stabbing a Japanese woman and teenager last month remains in Japanese custody, according to a Yokohama family court spokesman.

The seaman recruit has been in the family court’s custody since his case was sent to the court on July 25. The court decided Tuesday, the day his initial two-week custody period was up, to hold him another two weeks, the spokesman said.

The sailor was accused of stabbing a 16-year-old girl in the stomach and a 26-year-old woman in the back after an argument at an apartment near Mabori Kaigan train station the morning of July 5.

The sailor fled but was arrested later that day after admitting to the stabbings, police said. Both the teenager and the woman were expected to recover from their injuries.

Family court will decide whether to send the case back to the prosecutor’s office, dismiss the case, or send the sailor to juvenile training school.

“We have confidence in the Japanese legal system and trust them to do the right thing,” said Commander, Naval Forces Japan spokesman Cmdr. David Waterman.
