Kenneth, what’s your AFN radio program like? The name of the show is the Ken Raimondi show. We have a Top-40 adult contemporary format playing hits from the ’80s, ’90s and today. I also provide commentary on today’s major issues: Why are Crocs shoes so popular? Why do people go on Larry King?

How would you describe your on-air personality? I am me no matter where I go. I have a tendency to speak out and observe my surroundings without fully thinking about what I’m saying. Luckily for me, I had a tough grandmother who taught me what not to say. What my teachers called “talkative” I’ve turned into “profitable!”

What do you like most about doing the show? When I go into a music set after a comedy bit and people start to call and share their views in whatever topic I was discussing, that’s my favorite part.

What is the difference between civilian and military broadcasting?I worked for a very short time in civilian broadcasting. What I saw was a dog-eat-dog world where everyone is out there for themselves. It’s like show business. When you’re it, you’re it, and if you’re not, then you are clawing your way to the top. There is little to no stability. I wanted stability and I like working with a team I can trust. The Air Force has given me the opportunity to do both.

Tell us about your involvement in the USAF honor guard at Moody Air Force Base, Ga.It really opened my eyes to the importance of service. We often forget what we mean to others when we wear the uniform during our day-to-day duties. I’ll never forget kneeling before widows, handing them the flag, saluting and walking away as the last Air Force image they’ll take with them. It’s an honor I’ll never forget and an honor you can’t get anywhere else.

Tell us about your challenges and joys of recruiting in Massachusetts. When you meet a young person who is smart, talented, driven and is looking for an organization that will help open doors currently closed or focus them in a positive direction, and that person comes back in blue and says thank you, you know you have changed their lives.

Any funny stories from recruiting duty? It’s not every day you get to dress up in a big inflatable recruiter costume (Ricky the Recruiter) and run around Boston Common. The funniest part about it was holding a dance competition with some kids. I held my own even though I was an 8-foot inflated recruiter!

How about the funniest story from your time on the radio? It was a week after my birthday and I hadn’t heard from my sister. Not long after I got on the air, I got a package delivered to me. The package was a Nintendo Wii from my sister! I was so ecstatic I had to share this moment with the listeners ON the air. I ripped into the package and jumped about the studio and of course apologized for talking bad about my sister!

What do most people not know about you? When you look at me, I look like a typical New Englander who probably grew up in a posh suburb. Not so much. I grew up in Bridgeport, Conn. when it had one of the highest murder rates in the country, then moved to Stratford, Conn., right down the road from the projects where it wasn’t uncommon to find crack vials on the street. I never dared ride my bike or walk down the wrong side of the street because that would be the end of me. Not many people meet me and guess that I grew up in the ghetto!

Being from Connecticut, are you a Red Sox or a Yankees fan?I love this question because people always ask, Yankees or Red Sox? Neither! I fall in the gray area that affords me neither hate nor respect, I’m a Mets fan!
