The U.S. Navy has identified the pilot who ejected from his F/A-18C Hornet on Monday night during a training exercise in the South Pacific as Lt. Chris Williams.
The incident occurred while the jet was operating approximately 20 nautical miles from the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, according to 7th Fleet spokesman Lt. Steve Curry.
Williams ejected safely and was picked up by a U.S. helicopter shortly afterward. The fighter jet was lost at sea.
“Details as to the cause are pending due to the investigation,” Curry wrote in an e-mail.
The jet was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 195, part of Naval Air Facility Atsugi-based Carrier Air Wing 5. The Kitty Hawk, forward-deployed to Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, is on its summer deployment in the Western Pacific.
