WASHINGTON — Air Force officials have released the name of the victim and other details from last week’s F-16 crash inside Iraq.

Maj. Kevin Sonnenberg, 42, of McClure, Ohio, was killed on June 15 when his jet crashed a few miles north of Balad Air Base shortly after midnight.

Sonnenberg, a member of the 112th Fighter Squadron out of Toledo, was one of more than 300 airman from Ohio deployed to Iraq in May.

He was assigned to the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing when his single-seater jet went down.

Col. Thomas Deall, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command Air Forces, told The Associated Press officials are still investigating the crash, but the accident does not appear to be the result of hostile fire.

The aircraft was flying on a close air support mission in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, CENTAF said in a Friday news release.

The last F-16 crash in Iraq occurred in November, when a jet piloted by Maj. Troy Gilbert went down in Anbar province.

A Defense Department investigation showed that accident was a result of Gilbert’s aggressive flying trying to attack a group of insurgents engaged with U.S. forces.
