YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — Japanese police have charged a Yokosuka-based Navy lieutenant with leaving the scene of an accident with out reporting it, Navy officials said Friday.

Hayama police allege the 30-year-old officer, whose name was not released, was driving toward Isshiki from Yokosuka in Hayama-cho around 11:40 p.m. on April 7 when he hit a car at a stop sign and drove away.

The driver of the other car, who was not injured, reported the accident and the Navy officer’s license plate number, police said. Hayama police forwarded the case to Yokohama District Public Prosecutors Office in Yokosuka on Wednesday without taking the officer into custody.
