IWAKUNI MARINE CORPS AIR STATION, Japan — A Marine was questioned by Japanese police Sunday evening after the vehicle he was driving hit and killed a Japanese bicyclist early Sunday morning, according to a Marine Corps spokeswoman.

Sgt. Frank A Barbara, of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, had not been charged with any crime as of Sunday evening, according to Master Sgt. Lesli Coakley, a spokeswoman for the base. No alcohol was involved, she said.

The accident happened at 6:20 a.m. Sunday near the Miyajima station, closer to Hiroshima than to Iwakuni, Coakley said.

Marine officials on Sunday visited with the family of the 78-year-old victim, according to a press release. They offered their prayers and apologies to the family, the statement said.

As of Sunday night, Itsukaichi police had jurisdiction in the matter, Coakley said.
