Bases around Japan have scheduled a number of events to celebrate Black History Month. Here’s a list of what’s been scheduled as of Jan. 30, provided by each base’s organizers. (Click to jump ahead to listings for South Korea and Okinawa)

JapanYokosuka Naval Base

All month — The library will feature a display of books and DVDs on black heritage.

Feb. 5 — Yokosuka’s Seaside Club will host an African-American Heritage Month Buffet from 5 to 9 p.m.

Feb. 5 — Movie tributes will be held by the Single Sailors Liberty Program on Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 6 p.m. in the Spectrum Center.

Feb. 6 — R&B band Fantasy plus a soul food buffet starting at 7 p.m. on the third-floor ballroom of Club Alliance. Tickets are $14.95 and are on sale now at the club’s cash cage.

Feb. 10 — A blues concert will be staged by J.J. Vicars in the Chief Petty Officer Club’s Major Room from 7 to 8 p.m.

Feb. 23 — A black movie festival runs from 1 to 6 p.m. in Negishi’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation program office and library.

Naval Air Facility Atsugi

Feb. 7 — R&B band Fantasy will perform in a concert that is free and open to all adults. The show starts at 8 p.m. at Club Trilogy.

Sasebo Naval Base

Thursday — Black History Month kickoff and cake-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Galley.

Thursday to Feb. 28 — Black History Month Exhibit Contest basewide.

Feb. 7 and 21 — Open mic at 7 p.m. at Galaxies.

Feb. 16 — Hip-hop contest at 10 p.m. at Galaxies.

Feb. 18 — Pot luck at 3 p.m. at Fellowship Hall.

Feb. 21 — E.J. King High School Black History Month play at 5 p.m. at Hario Theater.

Feb. 23 — 3K Fun Run at 11:30 a.m. at Fleet Landing.

Feb. 24 — Banquet and fashion show at 6 p.m. at Hario Theater.

Yokota Air Base

Feb. 9 — Yokota East Elementary School needs 13 volunteers to read to about 26 classrooms in 30-minute increments. Preferred times are 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Feb. 20-23 — The Yume and Kibo child development centers are looking for eight volunteers to read to preschool-age children for one day during the week. Each person is needed for two 30-minute classes from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Feb. 23 — Yokota West Elementary School is seeking five volunteers to read during its 13th Annual Learn-a-Bration Day. The sessions will be held in 20-minute increments from 8 to 9:20 a.m., with one volunteer needed for each. If interested in giving a presentation, contact Mr. or Mrs. McCallum at DSN 225-7611.

Misawa Air Base

The 35th Services Squadron or private organizations haven’t advertised any events for Black History Month at Misawa, according to base public affairs officials.

South KoreaSEOUL — Military commands across the peninsula will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of events, from commemoration ceremonies to talent shows, health fairs to special meals.

“We have many events planned to recognize, celebrate and commemorate the contribution of African-Americans to our nation and U.S. military,” said Sgt. 1st Class Adam Morrison, 19th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) equal opportunity advisor in an Area IV news release. “This will be a good opportunity for participants to learn about and understand black history.”

The following events are to be held:

AREA I

Feb. 23: Extravaganza, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Camp Red Cloud theater. Call 732-6856 for more information.

Feb. 13: Luncheon with guest speaker Lt. Col. Sammie L. Hargrove, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Kimbro Hall for Camp Casey/Castle community. Call 732-6856 for more information.

AREA II

Feb. 9: The Troop Command will host a ceremony with guest speaker Maj. Chris Fland beginning at 3 p.m. in Yongsan’s Multipurpose Theater #1. To include singing, poetry and dance.

Feb. 12: The Troop Command will show the movie “Glory” beginning at 2 p.m. in Yongsan’s Multipurpose Theater. Call 723-7743.

Feb. 23: Commemoration ceremony with guest speaker Lt. Col. Samuel C. Fields begins at noon at the Yongsan Main Post Club. To include songs, dance, poetry and food. Call 738-5950 for more information.

Area III

AREA IV

Feb. 8: Luncheon — Open to the community, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Henry’s Grill Dining Facility on Camp Henry. Meal price is $3.65 for U.S. and South Korean civilian employees and family members. Soldiers will be served beginning at noon. Guests are welcome 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Menu items includes Southern fried catfish, barbecue, Hopping Johns, fried okra, collard greens and more.

Feb. 21: Commemoration ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community Activity Center on Camp Carroll and 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Community Club on Camp Walker. Guest speaker is Col. Gracus K. Dunn, commander, Combat Support Coordination Team #2. Features dynamic performances, displays, memoirs, prizes and “soul food” sampling. OkinawaBlack History Month event organizers at Air Force, Marine Corps and Army installations on Okinawa have scheduled a number of events to observe the month. Here is a list of what’s on tap as of Feb. 1.

Kadena Air Base

The Kadena African American Heritage Committee has planned several events on the air base throughout February to commemorate Black History Month, according to Master Sgt. Jeff Loftin, a Kadena Air Base spokesman:

Friday: A film festival starts at 5:45 p.m. at the Schilling Community Center with a showing of “The Tuskegee Airmen” and “Glory Road.”

Saturday: The film festival continues at 2 p.m. with “Boycott” and “Something the Lord Made.”

Feb. 10: African American Heritage Extravaganza is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Singers, dancers, actors and presenters for poems and other readings can contact rlove1@ oasis.mediatti.net or DSN 634-5345 to participate.

Feb. 17: The film festival continues at the Banyan Tree starting at 2 p.m. with “Miss Evers’ Boys” and “Soldier’s Story.”
