PYONGTAEK, South Korea — A new commander will take charge of the 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base in South Korea on Tuesday.

Col. Brian T. Bishop will assume command of the wing, known as the Wolf Pack, in a change-of-command ceremony at 9 a.m. in Hangar 3.

He replaces Col. William W. Uhle Jr., who has led the wing since May 2004. The Wolf Pack commander’s position is a one-year tour.

Bishop’s last assignment was chief of the flight operations division at Air Combat Command headquarters, Langley Air Force Base, Va.

Uhle is headed to the Pentagon to work as a liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The 8th Fighter Wing’s squadrons include two F-16 units: the 35th Fighter Squadron, nicknamed the “Pantons,” and the 80th Fighter Squadron, the “Juvats.”

By 8th Fighter Wing tradition, the wing commander is referred to as “The Wolf.” It dates to the Vietnam War when Col. Robin Olds nicknamed the unit the “Wolf Pack.”

Bishop will become the 44th Wolf. He’s held numerous command, staff, and operational positions. A command pilot with more than 3,600 flight hours, he has flown the F-16, T-37, TG-4, TG-7, TG-10 and TG-14. He was promoted to colonel in April 2000.

Bishop graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma City University in Lawton, Okla. He graduated from the Air Command and Staff College in 1994 and from the Air War College in 2001.
