BAMBERG, Germany — The diverse attendees at Wednesday’s Freedom Fitness Center dedication on Warner Barracks included engineers wearing their underwear outside of their clothes and a handful of people in pajamas.
The event was the official grand opening and dedication of the fitness center. But the dodge ball tournament that followed was the big draw, attracting about 200 players on 19 teams, including one from Kitzingen.
The festivities included a raffle for two exercise bikes, and a dodge ball toss in which 10 people selected from the crowd had to throw a dodge ball through a windshield-shaped hole at various distances. All 10 who were selected won a prize ranging from a portable stereo to a flat-screen television.
Inspired by the movie “Dodgeball,” teams were encouraged to wear unusual team uniforms. The candidates’ uniforms included teams wearing pajamas, athletic supporters and briefs outside of their clothes, and bow ties and white shirts with shorts.
Team Duck ’Em was still getting its uniforms ready minutes before the ceremony began, but one player boldly declared his team would win despite the lack of a strategy.
“We’re going to win,” said Pfc. Thomas Hoff, Company A, 82nd Engineer Battalion. “We don’t need no strategy. We’re that good. Strategy is for losers.”
Or not. The Company B, 82nd Engineer Battalion team, “Team Bohica,” finished on top in the double-elimination tournament followed by the Kitzingen medics “Stunners” in second place.
