YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — Community Bank, the financial institution serving the U.S. military overseas, is dropping check-cashing fees but doubling stop-payment charges and will charge interest-bearing accounts a $6 monthly maintenance fee, according to account statements issued this month.

The bank will implement the fee changes for all customers beginning Wednesday, according to the monthly statements.

Stop-payment charges are climbing from $5 to $10.

The statement did not indicate whether the $6 monthly maintenance fee on interest-bearing accounts could be averted by sustaining a minimum daily balance. According to Community Bank’s Web site at www.dodcommunitybank.com, no monthly maintenance fee has been assessed on interest-bearing checking accounts with a minimum daily balance of $500.

Bank supervisors and customer-service representatives at the Yokota branch, contacted Thursday, declined to elaborate on the adjustments, saying they have not yet been briefed on them. The Yokota Community Bank employees said they could not discuss the changes until after meetings with bank officials, which have been scheduled for before the effective date.

Melissa Haywood, the senior customer-service representative at Yokota’s Community Bank, did say the new fees would not apply to business or organizational accounts, only checking and savings accounts held by individuals.
