Bases across the Pacific have big plans to mark Memorial Day, honoring those who have given their lives in service to the United States. Many bases, while they’re at it, also are using this weekend to kick off the summer.

Below is a list of events and observances planned for the weekend as of Thursday. Check with your base’s community services or activity offices for late additions and information.

Japan

Naval Air Facility Atsugi: The Atsugi Command Memorial Day Observance is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd main sanctuary. The chapel and The Mustang Association will sponsor refreshments and swimming at the outdoor pool following the memorial. The event is open to all hands.

Camp Zama: U.S. Army Japan will hold a Memorial Day observance 10-11 a.m. Monday at the Community Cultural Center. The event will include a fallen comrade table ceremony, wreath dedication and firing-squad salute. Commanding Gen. Elbert Perkins will be guest speaker.

Yokosuka Naval Base: The Seaside Club is offering Memorial Day weekend specials for veterans, and a special at the Yokosuka Bowling Center offers all-day bowling for $9 per lane, shoe rentals included.

Negishi Housing Area: Residents of Negishi can attend ceremonies at two foreigner cemeteries in the Yokohama area on Sunday. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the Negishi Club to catch a bus first to the Yokohama Foreigners Cemetery and later the British Commonwealth War Cemetery for a memorial.

Yokota Air Base: The Officers Club was to hold its Memorial Day Weekend special theme night Friday with music, food and prizes.

The seventh annual “I Scream Social” takes place 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Sakana Pool’s grand opening. Free ice cream and beverages will be offered as part of the outdoor facility’s summer kickoff. Call Justina Jensen at DSN 225- 6133.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9555 will hold its annual Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday on the Kennedy Memorial Monument, near the traffic circle with the Air Force jet on Yokota’s south side. The event will include about 60 servicemembers in formation. A group commander from the 374th Airlift Wing is scheduled to deliver remarks.

Tama Hills Golf Course is open for play Memorial Day. The weekend lottery system will be used to determine tee times. Call Tama Hills Golf Course at DSN 224-3426 or the Yokota Par 3 at DSN 225-8815 to request a slot.

A Memorial Day lunch special will be offered Monday at the Samurai Café. Call Sam Sansone at DSN 225-8870.

Camp Fuji: Marine Corps Community Services is offering free movies and snacks at the Roadhouse Enlisted Club all day Monday.

Misawa Air Base: Misawa celebrates the opening of its base beach with the 35th Services Squadron annual “Beach Bash” noon-5 p.m. Saturday. Activities, events and offerings include music, free food and drinks, free powerboat rides, a climbing wall, an inflatable bouncy castle, paddleboats and kayaks. Parking will be in the North Area or Rocky’s Roost parking lot; no parking will be allowed at the beach. A free shuttle will operate 11:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m., making a continuous loop among Rocky’s Roost, the North Area Shoppette and the beach’s main gate. Call DSN 226-3480.

Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni: The base was to hold a Memorial Day ceremony 3 p.m.- 3:45 p.m. Friday at the Vietnam Memorial Park adjacent to the commissary. Col. Michael Dyer, base commander, was to serve as host.

Sasebo Naval Base: A Memorial Day 5K Run sponsored by the base Morale, Welfare and Recreation department starts at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Nimitz Park. MWR also is sponsoring a Memorial Day Golf Tournament Monday at Huis Ten Bosch. Call DSN 252-3588.

Guam

Andersen Air Force Base, Naval Base Guam: No Memorial Day ceremonies are planned.

Off base: A retreat and wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Guam Veterans Cemetery in Piti. Call the Veterans Affairs Office at (671) 475-4222.

Okinawa

Off base: More than 200 people are expected to attend a Memorial Day observance at 9 a.m. Monday at the International Cemetery in Naha, where most of those buried are U.S. servicemembers. The observance will include the placing of wreaths and washing of headstones. The Marine Materiel Readiness Battalion is in charge of the event, which will include brief remarks by U.S. military officials and U.S. Vice Consul Jason McInerney.

White Beach Naval Facility: Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation is sponsoring a Memorial Day picnic from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Live entertainment will be offered, along with banana boat rides, a kiddie land playground and a picnic menu of hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecued ribs and chicken and side dishes. The event is open to all SOFA-status personnel on Okinawa.

Korea

Off base: A Memorial Day service is set for 11 a.m. Monday at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Pusan. Army Brig. Gen. Timothy P. McHale, commander of the 19th Theater Support Command at Camp Henry in Taegu, is scheduled guest speaker. Call DSN 764-4913 for more information.

Osan Air Base: Events set 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Memorial Day include games and food 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; a Latin soul band, and a Korean traditional drum group performance. Call DSN 784-4044 for details.

Fitness events include a three-mile relay race; racquetball, volleyball, three-on- three basketball, dodge ball, and one-pitch softball tournaments; a fire-truck pull, and a slam-dunk contest. Call the base fitness center at DSN 784-9983 for more information.

Kunsan Air Base: A pingpong tournament is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Loring Club. Call DSN 782-4575.

The Loring Club also is hosting an “all-nighter” Saturday in its lounge and ballroom. A performance by band Faded starts at 7 p.m. on the football field.

A two-person-scramble golf tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday on the golf course. Call DSN 782-5435.

The base community center hosts Kunsan Fear Factor all weekend. Call DSN 782-4619.

A 5K fun run starts at 9 a.m. Monday at the fitness center. Call DSN 782-4026.

Also Monday, a dodgeball tournament starts at 1 p.m. at the fitness center and a basketball tournament is slated for 1 p.m. at the outdoor court next to the fitness center.

Chinhae Naval Base: A Memorial Day picnic and volleyball tournament starts at 10 a.m. Monday and runs into the afternoon, near the bachelor quarters volleyball pit.

An outdoor movie at the base swimming pool is set for 7 p.m. Monday.

Camp Humphreys: A one-pitch softball tournament is scheduled all weekend. Call DSN 753-8810 for start times and other information.

Camp Long: A Korean-style pool tournament was to be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the community activities center

A Chuncheon International Mime festival is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at the community activities center. Call DSN 721-3386 for more information.

A “Magic” role-playing game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the community activities center. Call DSN 721-3386 for more information.

A 4x4 volleyball tournament will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the post gym. Call DSN 721-2515 for more information.

Camp Eagle: A 5K run is scheduled for Monday. Call DSN 721-2515 for times and other information. A racquetball tournament is set for 6 p.m. Monday. Call DSN 721-2515 for more information.

Camp Red Cloud: A tennis tournament team meeting is to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fitness Center.

A nine-ball pool tournament begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Community Activity Center.

An indoor biathlon begins at 10 a.m. Monday at the Physical Fitness Center.

Camp Stanley: On Saturday, the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program will host a commissary awareness tour and cook-out, and at 3 p.m. will hold a pool party and dance at the pool.

All weekend, a softball tournament will take place on Stanley Field, starting at 11 a.m. each day.

An eight-ball pool tournament — $5 entry fee, winner takes all — will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Community Activity Center.

Camp Essayons: A chess tournament is to begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Recreation Center.

The Warrior Division Invitational Golf Tournament will start at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Casey Golf Course.

All weekend, Casey sports will host events including a sand volleyball tournament at West Casey Court, a basketball tournament at Carey Fitness Center and a softball tournament at Stewart Field. A tennis tournament will take place at Hovey Courts on Saturday and Sunday; a racquetball tournament will be held Sunday and Monday at Carey Fitness Center.

Another basketball tournament will be held all weekend at Essayons Fitness Center.

Movies will play all day (bring your own movies) at the Recreation Center starting at noon Saturday.

A pool tournament will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Recreation Center.

Camp Casey: A pool tournament will start at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Casey Community Activities Center.

A Memorial Day war movie marathon will start at noon Monday at the Casey Casey CAC.

Camp Hovey: A Memorial Day tennis tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at Hovey Courts, time TBA.

An eight-ball pool tournament will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Hobson CAC.

Yongsan Garrison: A teen block party will take place at Hannam Village on Saturday.

A community festival will be held 1-8 p.m. Sunday on Field 12. Entry is by donation.

A miniature golf tournament is slated for 10 a.m. Sunday at the Family Fun Park on Yongsan’s South Post. Special event and giveaway of 65-inch TV at bowling alley at 11 a.m. Monday, to be followed by a 9-8 pin tournament at 2 p.m.
