CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Marines training on Kin Blue Beach just outside Camp Hansen on Monday afternoon found the body of an unidentified man.
Kin Blue Beach, according to a Marine Corps official, is a “publicly accessible part of the Camp Hansen training area.”
Okinawa police were informed by the Marine Corps shortly after 2 p.m. Monday that the body had been found, according to a spokesman for Okinawa Prefectural Police in Uruma City.
“The body found under a tree was a man who was between 160 and 165 centimeters (5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 4 inches) tall,” the spokesman said. “His shoe size was 25.5 centimeters (7½),” he said.
The age of the man is unknown, said an Okinawa Prefectural police spokesman. He said that judging from the man’s physical frame, police believe he may have been Japanese.
The deceased was wearing work clothes, the police spokesman said, and a rope was found near the tree.
The body was decomposed to the point where the bones were dismembered and skeletonized, he said.
“We believe that the body is at least six months old,” the spokesman said. “From the circumstance and condition in which the body was found, suicide is highly possible.”
Okinawa Prefectural Police are investigating the death, the spokesman said. Military law enforcement officers are assisting the Okinawa police in the investigation, the Marine Corps official said.
