CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” is proving as popular at base theaters as it is in the United States.

Nine of 11 shows at the Camp Foster theater from May 19 to May 22 sold out, said AAFES spokeswoman Sgt. Amanda Glenn.

At Yokota Air Base, just two of 11 shows sold out; however, the theater averaged more than 70 percent capacity since “Episode III” opened there last week, Glenn said.

Tickets at both theaters went on sale three days before the opening-night show. Tickets sold out hours before the show began on subsequent days.

AAFES last sold advance tickets for 2002’s “Spider-Man.” No figures were available to compare the two movies’ popularity.

At Osan Air Base in South Korea, “Episode III” drew an audience so “huge” that the Osan Theater will use the turnout as the base line for measuring future big crowds, said H. Lee Holloway, AAFES central exchange general manager at Osan.

“We had a remarkable turnout,” he said. “We showed the movie actually eight times at the Osan Theater and had … over 3,353 customers that saw the movie.”

By comparison, he said, strong weekend turnouts for other films have drawn only about a third of the Star Wars audience, Holloway said.

The movie also played nine times to more than 4,900 people at Yongsan’s movie theater, said manager Chung Bung-ok.

The new Star Wars film closed the weekend with three-day ticket sales of $108.5 million in stateside theaters, second to the $115 million take of “Spider-Man.” The four-day take for the Star Wars saga set a new record of $158.5 million.
