RAF LAKENHEATH, England — An airman with the 48th Fighter Wing will be restricted for 60 days and spend 90 days doing hard labor without confinement after pleading guilty to attempted wrongful possession of a controlled substance.

Staff Sgt. Nathan D. Tincher, a member of the 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron at RAF Lakenheath, also pleaded guilty to wrongful attempted use of a controlled substance. His court-martial took place Monday.

In both cases, the controlled substance was mushrooms containing psilocybin.

The first charge was for an offense in December 2004, and the second for an offense in November 2004. Both were near Bury St. Edmunds.

Tincher was found not guilty of wrongfully using mushrooms.

He was also reduced in rank to airman basic and given a reprimand and a bad-conduct discharge from the Air Force.

Still time to register for college scholarship

Juniors and seniors at high schools across Europe still have a few months to apply for $1,000 Presidential Freedom scholarships from the Corporation for National and Community Service and partner organizations.

The deadline for the scholarships, which generally reward students for volunteer work, is July 1. Information is available at www.nationalservice.gov.

The scholarships are limited to two students at each high school or community youth group. Last year, 90 students across Europe received the awards.

Some, such as Bradley Curran of Vicenza High School in Italy, have already been notified they have earned the scholarships this year. Dina Paxenos, program manager for the CNCS, said she couldn’t release the entire list of this year’s winners until the deadline ends and students waive privacy rights.
