The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk left its homeport at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan, on Tuesday for a scheduled underway period after two months in port.
The ship is joined by Carrier Air Wing 5, which will be conducting qualifications at sea.
The Kitty Hawk Strike Group is the largest carrier strike group in the Navy and includes the ship, the air wing and ships from Destroyer Squadron 15.
On Monday, the 7th Fleet command ship USS Blue Ridge also departed for a cruise, which includes stops in Australia to participate in the bilateral exercise Talisman Saber, sponsored by Pacific Command and the Australian Defense Force Joint Operations Command.
