An Air Force helicopter landed on an island about 50 miles west of Okinawa after multiple warning lights signaled a malfunction Tuesday, an Air Force spokeswoman said.

The HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter landed at 12:45 p.m. on a dirt road along the north shore of Kume Island, officials said.

The exact cause of the warning indications is unknown, they said; maintenance personnel were scheduled to examine the helicopter Monday night.

“There were multiple warning lights, making it difficult to isolate the nature of the problem,” said Air Force spokeswoman Patricia Miyagi. “The crew followed their checklist and sat the aircraft down as soon as possible.”

The helicopter, which was crewed by four airmen, was over water when the warning lights came on, Miyagi said. It landed at the first available and safe area, she said.

The Air Force is keeping Japanese government officials briefed on the helicopter’s status, Miyagi said.
