RAF MILDENHALL, England — A grandmother of six, who was arrested while protesting outside the American communications base at Menwith Hill, has been ordered to wear an electronic device so her movement can be monitored.
Lindis Percy, 63, of Hull, also must remain indoors between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. for eight weeks, according to local news reports.
Percy received the sentence from a district judge Tuesday after being found guilty in April of five offenses related to her weekly protests outside the base. The charges include one count of obstructing a highway and four counts of obstructing a police officer.
For nearly five years, Percy, the wife of a vicar and a dedicated proponent of nonviolent protest, has joined others outside the base from 6 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday to protest its presence and its mission.
Percy told the BBC she plans to continue her participation in the weekly protests.
Alleged cheater to face trial
RHEIN-MAIN AIR BASE, Germany — A military judge Monday ordered a senior noncommissioned officer at the center of an Air Force promotion cheating scandal to stand trial at a general court-martial in July.
Master Sgt. J. Abdur Rahim Saafir and his defense team made final motions for consideration to Maj. Adam Oler, the judge during the Article 39a hearing at Rhein-Main.
Saafir, who is accused of having test booklets and answers at his house, requested a delay in setting a trial date so that he can decide whether he wants a trial by panel or judge alone.
Saafir has to make his decision by a July 7 hearing. On the same day, Oler will rule on motions to allow the defense team to view materials said to have been confiscated from Saafir’s home as well as confidential Air Force test materials for comparison.
Testimony is to begin July 11 at 8:30 and is tentatively set at Ramstein Air Base.

New Ramstein COs take over
A trio of squadrons received new commanders Monday at Ramstein Air Base.
Lt. Col. Christopher Mardis assumed command of the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. Maj. Mary Toohey took command of the 86th Maintenance Squadron. Maj. David Kieselhorst was handed command duty over the 86th Maintenance Operations Squadron. The ceremony also marked the instatement of Lt. Col. Martin Lovato as new deputy commander of the 86th Maintenance Group.
All of the commanders have been stationed at Ramstein for more than a year in the 86th.
At the end of the ceremony, Col. Park Plumb, 86th commander, challenged each of the new commanders and each of the maintainers to embrace new LEAN initiatives that will be implemented over the next few months.
“These initiatives will further cut waste in manpower, facilities, funding, tools and equipment, and I know we’ll see huge breakthrough,” he said. “The end benefit will be better support to the warfighter, while we work smarter and not longer.”
