A senior at Lakenheath High School, England, has been named a Presidential Scholar, one of 143 seniors worldwide honored by the program this year, according to information on the program’s Web site.
Mark Norsworthy, son of Chief Master Sgt. Michael and Karen Norsworthy, will join his fellow scholars during a week of activities in Washington in June. They will meet government officials, educators, authors, musicians, scientists and other accomplished people.
Scholars are allowed to take one influential teacher with them for the week. Norsworthy, who spent two years at Ramstein High School in Germany before moving to England, chose Karen Campbell, who taught him advanced placement chemistry during his sophomore year and remains at the school.
An executive order in 1964 created the program to recognize and honor some of the nation’s top graduating seniors. Since then, more than 5,000 seniors have been named Presidential Scholars. The honor is based on the students’ academic work and test scores. Since 1979, several students have been honored each year for their talents in the visual, creative and performing arts.
