HANAU, Germany — Two Hanau-based soldiers were killed Friday in a late-night motorcycle wreck on a highway outside Büdingen, Army officials said Sunday.
The Harley Davidson they were riding on hit a guardrail on the B47 highway shortly before midnight, killing both men instantly, said Lt. Col. Howard Malone, director of Emergency Services for the 104th Area Support Group.
The names of the two soldiers are being withheld pending notification of their next of kin, officials said.
But, Malone said, one of the soldiers was a sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment.
The other was a sergeant assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarter Detachment of 565th Engineer Battalion, Malone said.
Both soldiers lived in Büdingen.
The owner of the motorcycle appeared to be driving too fast around a curve when he lost control, Malone said.
It does not appear alcohol played a role in the incident, though both German police and U.S. military officials are still investigating.
German police officials were unavailable for comment Sunday because of a German holiday.
The owner of the motorcycle, had just recently purchased the vehicle, was set to transfer out of Germany next month, according to Chaplain (Capt.) Xuan Tran of the 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment.
“He went downrange for 15 months and nothing happened to him. And he comes back here, and just like that … after one mistake,” Tran said Sunday.
