WüRZBURG, Germany — An Illesheim-based soldier was sentenced to 21 months in prison last week in connection with a Jan. 27 crime spree aimed at his estranged wife.
At a court-martial Tuesday, Pvt. Christopher D. Travis of 7th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to obey a lawful order and one count each of assault, unlawful entry, damaging private property and failing to obey a general regulation, according to a case summary prepared by the 1st Infantry Division’s Staff Judge Advocate.
The court acquitted him of two counts of rape and one of fleeing from military police.
According to the summary, Travis’ wife, Daniela, asked his command on Jan. 26 to help her move out of their house and end a six-month marriage. 2nd Lt. Julie Arias, an officer in the 7-159 Aviation, issued Travis a no-contact order that also barred him from telephoning his wife.
Daniela moved to the home of a friend in Ottenhofen, Germany. That evening, according to the summary, Travis tried repeatedly to call her. He visited the friend’s house and, when he was rebuffed, slashed the tires of her car.
Early the next morning Travis returned, climbed a balcony and kicked in a door. Then he stormed inside and punched Daniela in the face. He tried to run away, but military police captured him, the summary said.
Besides the jail term, Judge (Lt. Col.) Robin Hall ordered Travis reduced to the lowest enlisted rank and given a bad-conduct discharge.
