OKINAWA CITY, Okinawa — A U.S. soldier assigned to South Korea was arrested Wednesday on Okinawa for allegedly robbing a cab driver.

Pvt. James Joiner Jr., 20, assigned to Camp Red Cloud in Uijongbu, South Korea, was arrested about 5 a.m. in an Okinawa City bar district after being identified by a 56-year-old cab driver who told police he was attacked by a passenger.

The cab driver said the man hailed his cab in the Chuo district, near Kadena Air Base’s Gate Two, at 3:30 a.m. and asked to go to the Uechi bar district. According to an Okinawa police report, he grabbed the cab driver from behind and fled with 5,000 yen (about $47) and $10 in U.S. currency.

The driver was not injured, a police spokesman said.

Joiner is being held at the Okinawa City police station pending indictment. A charge of robbery was referred to the Naha Public Prosecutor’s office Thursday.

Joiner denied the accusation, saying he was misidentified, the police spokesman said.
