Japanese police have arrested a sailor missing from the Navy for almost six weeks, officials said Tuesday.

Seaman Apprentice Michael Joseph Pyper Jr., 21, of the U.S. Kitty Hawk air department, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of attempted larceny and intrusion upon premises, Japanese and Navy officials said.

Pyper had been in unauthorized-absence status since April 1, said Kitty Hawk spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Brook DeWalt. He had been in the Navy barely more than a year, officials said.

Pyper broke into Tado Elementary School in Yokosuka city about 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, through the unlocked window of a broadcasting room on the first floor, and rummaged through a teacher’s locker room, a police official said. The sailor ran when he saw police, who arrived after an alarm went off at the school, the police official said. Police caught Pyper about 2:35 a.m., the police official said.

“There was no indication of any property damage or any stolen property,” DeWalt said.

Japanese authorities and the Navy have yet to charge Pyper, who was in Japanese police custody as of Tuesday, officials said.

“There are no Navy charges at this point,” DeWalt said.
