CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — A Naha club has been placed off-limits as a result of an investigation into the death of a Marine private killed in a fall there April 16.

Effective May 4, the Café Bar Paul and Mike, also known as “Paul and Mike’s Place,” was placed off-limits for all U.S. military personnel and Department of Defense civilians assigned to Marine Corps Bases Japan and the III Marine Expeditionary Force. The order extends to their family members and others with SOFA status sponsored by MCBJ.

The bar is on the second floor of No. 3-2-2 Makishi, in downtown Naha.

“This establishment was placed off limits as part of a continuing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a servicemember who sustained fatal injuries there April 16,” said 1st Lt. Eric Tausch, a Marine spokesman.

Pfc. Joseph C. Filip, 20, of Clinton, N.Y., an aviation supply specialist with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron-36, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, died after falling down the bar’s stairs at 3 a.m., according to Okinawa police. A prefectural police spokesman said no foul play was suspected.

The Marines also conducted their own investigation into the incident.
