An Air Force security officer opened fire on a vehicle that sped past gate guards into Osan Air Base early Sunday morning, officials confirmed Monday.

Two South Koreans entered Doolittle Gate “at a high rate of speed” shortly after 8 a.m., said Osan spokesman Maj. Jack Miller. The driver stopped after about 200 yards, turned his vehicle around and began racing back toward the inbound gate, endangering the U.S. security forces and the South Korean air policemen who help guard all of Osan’s gates, Miller said.

“A security forces member fired one shot, missing the vehicle just before it crashed into a barrier and came to a stop,” the spokesman said.

There were no injuries, Miller said, and South Korea police apprehended the driver and passenger.

Pyongtaek police detective Ui Myung-hee said the driver, a 26-year-old man identified only as Park, is in police custody. Prosecutors will decide whether to charge him with drunken driving, driving without a license and illegally entering a U.S. military installation.

Ui said Park’s blood alcohol content was 0.139 when tested Sunday.

Park’s passenger, identified only as Lee, was released from custody Sunday, Ui said.

The two were drunkenly searching for a hamburger shop when they “mistakenly” drove through the gate, Ui said.

Ui said he didn’t think the pair entered the base with any clear purpose.

Miller said the car was removed and the gate was reopened in about an hour.
