CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq — U.S. Marines and soldiers destroyed a huge weapons cache and tons of ammunition discovered late last month in 13 hidden locations, according to a press statement released Saturday.

Marines from 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment and soldiers from the 155th Brigade Combat Team discovered the hidden weaponry during cordon-and-search operations near Amiriyah in the Anbar province of western Iraq. The caches took nearly a week to uncover, catalogue and destroy, the release stated.

Some of the significant items discovered included more than 4,100 mortar rounds, more than 800 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, more than 100,000 rounds of machine-gun ammunition, 400 grenades, and several thousand pounds of different types of explosives and bomb-making materials.

Some of the materials were buried and others were secreted in underground bunkers, officials said.
