CAMP FALLUJAH, Iraq — A U.S. Marine from 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment was killed Saturday and three others wounded when a homemade roadside bomb exploded in Karmah, officials said.
The Marine, part of Lima Company, was taken to Fallujah Surgical Hospital with shrapnel wounds to the chest. He died shortly after. The Marine’s name is being withheld until the Pentagon notifies his family.
The number of U.S. military deaths in the war stood at 1,592 as of Saturday, according to an Associated Press count.
Karmah, a town with 70,000 residents about 30 miles west of Baghdad, was raided more than a week ago by U.S. Marines and Iraqi Security Forces looking to rid the city of insurgents and weapons caches. Since the May 1 raid, Marines from 3-8 have maintained a steady presence in the city.
The death is the second combat-related casualty for the battalion since it arrived in the country in mid-January. A civilian interpreter assigned to the battalion also was killed.
Cpl. John T. Olson, 21, was killed Feb. 21 when the vehicle in which he was riding overturned following a roadside explosion.
The interpreter, Ray Kataya, was killed March 14 when the up-armored Humvee in which he was riding overturned into a creek and he drowned.
